Christmas Carol (Kolyadka)
Ukrainian Christmas carols are songs and poetic texts performed during Christmas (Koliada) and throughout the festive Christmas-tide period. Their tradition is over a thousand years old: some Ukrainian carols preserve elements that point to pre-Christian origins and the magical nature of ancient rituals. Christianity did not erase older customs but rather added its own themes and motifs.
Under the name “koliadky” (on the Left Bank also “koliada”, “koliadivka”) people grouped several folklore genres that were performed from the evening before Christmas until Shchedryi Vechir and New Year, that is, during the first week of the two-week Christmas-tide. So if someone wants to know “when carols are sung,” tradition allows caroling from the evening of 24 December until 13 January, depending on local custom.
In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the festive atmosphere was first created by church choirs and groups of young men who sang troparia, kondakia, and Christmas carols about the birth of Christ. This early phase of caroling was called “rozhdestvuvannia.” Carolers carried a decorated star, sang mostly outdoors, but could also enter homes if invited.
Another important layer of tradition is connected with the custom of the first visitor, known in Slobozhanshchyna and Poltavshchyna as “pakholkuvannia.” A boy or an adult man had to be the first to enter the house on Christmas morning. In villages without churches, and later in Soviet times when public group caroling was banned, this role was performed by small boys, the “pakholchyky,” who came early in the morning on 25 December and recited short carol-verse greetings. They were the first heralds of the holiday.
The main caroling began after midday on 25 December. At that time both women and mixed youth groups, as well as children alone or in small groups, could go caroling. The youngest carolers first visited relatives and neighbors. Short children’s carols often did not require vocal skill: they were chanted or sung in the simplest manner. If the hosts gave no reward, the children might respond with a humorous teasing verse, and some of these could be quite sharp. In other words, funny and joking carols also existed.
In the afternoon, adult (youth) groups caroled as well. Christmas carols include both Christian and secular plots. Traditionally, carols were performed in full; one could last up to five or six minutes, and large families were sung several pieces: general good-wish carols, wedding-themed carols for young adults, and separate texts for boys and girls. Young men often received carols about Cossack service; young women heard carols praising beauty and skill. Older people, especially widows, were sung carols-psalms.
Carols from Slobozhanshchyna usually have a solo opening line and a multipart refrain for 2 to 4 voices, though single-voice variants also exist. Vocal styles varied from loud, resonant “throaty” singing to thin, high “piping” timbre, and these manners were often combined within one piece.
A defining feature of the genre is its characteristic refrains: “Sviatyi vechir,” “Oi dai, Bozhe,” “Oi rano-rano,” “Pry zori-zori,” “Oi radui sia, zemle.” Some of these originate from pre-Christian ritual formulas. These refrains most clearly distinguish carols (koliadky) from shchedrivky, although their plots can sometimes be similar.
